Coffee making has come a long way from the times when using French press was the rave to vacuum methods or moka pot brewing. You are spoil on the different ways and machines to make coffee. There are manual, semi-automated and completely automatic machines that make quality coffee at home at the push of a button. They process everything from grinding your beans to frothing your coffee. A case in point are the pod coffee makers like Nespresso.

With different types of coffee makers available in the market, it is a good idea to get to know which one will fit your requirements depending on where you stand in the indulgence spectrum.  Some of us are connoisseurs’ that really relish an authentic brew that is made to exacting standards while others simply like a nice ‘cuppa’ of coffee.

Black Friday Espresso Coffee Machine Deals

Let’s get over the jargon first. What is an espresso?

This is a method of making coffee whereby pressurised hot water is forced through evenly ground coffee beans that are compacted. The result is a strong thick and concentrated brew that has a crema on top. Using milk, you can take this process further to make frothy drinks like cappuccino, lattes and other mild oriented drinks.

There are different types of espresso machines from low budget options to high end products (manual, semi-automated and fully automated).

Espresso machines’ core functionality is powered by steam, pump, compressed air or piston.

Steam-powered espresso machines use hot vapor under pressure to push water through finely-ground coffee. There are those who question this method, saying that steams overheats and end up changing the authentic flavor.

Pump powered espresso machines are commonly found in commercial coffee shops and high-end domestic espresso machines. The pump draws water from the tank and channels to the heating chamber. The water is heated to a calibrated degree, just below the boiling point (usually between 90-94o centigrade) and is pressurized through the ground using pressure generated from the pump to a cup. Pump brewing can be done manually or automatically. The manual process needs precision and training and is mainly done by baristas. Automatic pump coffee makers tend to be a bit pricier but really simplify the process of brewing. Pump based machines are said to make the best espresso drinks of all machines

  • Using a pump is said to make superior authentic coffee as is not overheated.
  • They are customizable; you can put your own spin when brewing.

The downside is that

  • They take time to master, especially the manual process.
  • They are unsuitable for large groups of people because they only make one or two cups at a time.

Compressed air-based machines as the name suggest compress air through ground coffee to make an espresso shot.

The piston is mainly a manual method that makes use of a handle to push down water under pressure through ground coffee.

As the name implies, all you have to do with these machines is feed in the beans. Everything else is programmed into the machine. It grounds compresses it (tamping) and filters it. Coffee loses its taste one it is ground, bean to cup machines grind it on demand, such that the ground coffee does not stay around but processed immediately to make rich, strong authentic coffee.

Automated bean to cup machines has every aspect of brewing programmed such that they make coffee and all milk-based drinks on demand.

What’s the difference between Capsule Machines, Pod and Pad

These terms are thrown about among coffee lovers but what exactly is the difference between them?

What are the capsules? These are small containers stuffed with ground coffee. The grain is filled into small aluminium or plastic packets using a vacuum. The containers hold approximately 4.4g-5.4g. Capsules are in most cases compatible with certain coffee makers. However, there are some machines that accept all sorts of capsules. Due to their flexible nature, capsules come in different combination and styles.

Because they are so easy to use and all you a lot of flexibility, capsules have become quite popular especially in the home coffee brewing niche.

Companies like Nespresso have invested heavily in capsule one serve machines. They are the founders of one serve machines. They patented the capsule method and sell rights to other companies to make compatible machines for Nespresso style one serve capsules.

Other brands other than Nespresso also make capsules that are compatible with their machine which is an indirect way of pressuring customers to be loyal to their brands.

Most capsule machines are compact with a small foot-print and fully automated. Coffee is effortless made a home by pressing a button.

Nespresso, Magimix and Tassimo are some of the major brands that make capsule one serve machines.

Benefits of using a capsule-based coffee machine.

  • Hassle-free when in use
  • Easy to maintain and clean
  • Minimises waste of ground coffee because of the precise packaging of capsules.
  • They have a variety of flavours and blends to fit your different tastes.

The downside to these machines are:

  • You tend to be tied to the capsules that are compatible with you.
  • They are expensive in the long
  • Some of the capsule containers are not recyclable.
  • They are not suitable for large groups because they can only make one cup at a time.

Black Friday Pods Coffee makers

Pods are also called Easy Service Espresso (ESE). They are compactly packaged ground coffee in filter paper. Unlike the capsule system, making coffee using pods is universal; any brand can make Easy Service Espresso machines. However, some brands make their machines to be compatible with pods produced by them. In case you get a machine that does not accept universal pods, you can always buy an adopter which will make your ESE machine use take other pods not necessarily made by the brand of the machine. The pods are biodegradable. A number of brands like Dualit and Philips make ESE coffee makers.

  • They are easy to use
  • Easy to maintain and clean,
  • The coffee made is consistent in taste
  • They do no pause environmental hazards

The taste is not as authentic as that of ground coffee makers.

Though Pads are fairly straight forward and effortless to use, they are not quite popular because the coffee made is not as strong as that made by other machines. Pads are freely filled ground coffee in tea-bag like sachets. Few machines are compatible with coffee brewed by pads such as SENSEO.

Drip Coffee Makers: Filter Coffee Machines

These are age-old machines that had their times in the ’70s and ’80s. They are straight forward to use and can make many cups at a time. A filter paper is below ground coffee, heat the water tank and let the hot water drip through the ground to make a brew.

Do you need an automated machine or not. Automated ones can be programmed to make coffee at set times.

Filter: There are disposable and permanent filters, permanent ones need to be cleaned regularly while disposable ones, though convenient and cheap tend to change the flavour of the coffee.

Water reservoir: you can choose between a thermal flask or glass jug. Though the jug will keep the coffee hot because it sits under a source of heat, it tends to make it bitter. The constant heating overcooks it and makes it less authentic. Thermal flasks are preferable because it will keep your coffee warm/hot without overheating it.

Benefits of Filter Coffee makers

  • Can make many cups at a time.
  • Effortless and easy to use
  • The output is always warm

  • They are not very portable because they tend to take much space on the kitchen worktop.
  • Constant heating can lead to overcooking
  • Some filters may change the taste of the drink

Common Coffee Machine Features

There are common features that run across many brands. Of course, some machines will have more features depending on how automated they are but the following features are what can be considered as basic core feature of any decent coffee maker worth it’s standing.

Timers (Programmable): This functionality enables to set the machine beforehand so that it can make a drink when you want it to without being prompted. For instance, you can set it to brew up at the time you wake up so that you wake up to a strong cup of coffee to shake your sleep off.

Detachable water reservoirs:  The water tank is where you fill in water that will be forced through the coffee to brew it. It is more convenient to have it detachable so that you can fill it easily directly from your tap. Detachable tanks are usually easy to clean. You also avoid incidences of accidental spills.

Steam Wand:  These are a slender extension with a small valve through which pressurised steam generated from the coffee makers heating chamber to create velvety tasty form. The steam wand is commonly used for stirring the milk to make a rich froth. They are embedded in some machines and are quite popular in espresso and bean-to-cup machines.

Filters: These are used to filter the water in case the water you use is hard; filters ideally protect your machine from corroding and reduce the chance of using unpleasant water to brew your drink. Other machines come fixed permanent filters. These require extra effort in keeping them clean but they will save you money in the long run.

Pressure bars: Rich quality drink is produced when pressured water is forced through ground coffee. Generating the right pressure will impact on the quality of brew you make. For better results pressure bar ob between 10-to 20 is recommended..

Monitors and Indicators: Most high-end machines that are fully automated have reminder triggers that alert you to maintain or clean your machine or change filters to keep your machine in good condition.

Auto Shutdown: This a very convenient feature that turns your machine off once it’s finished brewing a cup. Without an auto-shutdown, you will be forced to watch over your machine as it makes the coffee to manually shut it down when it’s done. However, with auto-shutdown, you can set and go do other pressing tasks and the machine will automatically turn itself off once finished making. Needless to say, this is very convenient especially in the morning rush.

Memory: This feature is common in top-end premium machines. You set your customised functions and the machine will remember them so that they run by default every other time you make coffee without having to do the setting all over again.

Drip Tray: This the serving station where you place your cup, a good drip tray should enable to use of different heights of cups, short/long.

Boilers: This is basically the engine room where the coffee is made. Single boilers enable you to make one cup at a time while dual boilers make two cups at a go. Dual boilers tend to be more costly than a single boiler.

Thermoblock Heating System: This helps maintain the water temperature at the optimum point for preparing tasty authentic coffee. The best temperature for brewing is usually between, 90-92 degree centigrade. This feature is common in espresso machines.

Things to Consider Before Getting a Coffee Machine Black Friday Deal

Coffee Machines

Kitchen space:

If you have small space like those living in inner-city flats, you might want to consider a capsule or bean to cup coffee makers. They tend to be compact and do not require large spaces to operate. However, if space is not a hindrance you might want to consider dual heating machines or those with grinders and frothers’. These give you more functionality and flexibility in the kinds of brews you make:

Time Constrains: Some machines take more time to brew a cup than others. If you only need a coffee maker for a quick coffee, capsule and bean to cup machines are good options. If you are short of time, a bigger voltage will shorten the heat up time.

Budget constraints

The automated and programmable/customizable a machine is the more it will cost. Most brands have low, medium and high. Pick one that will fit the budget at your disposal.

Number of cups you need

If you are looking to make many cups of coffee. You might as well get a drip`machine but if you take a few espressos will serve you well.

There are so many brands that make decent coffee makers. Some have even patented some of the methods of making and sub-contract other companies to make machines for the said methods. A case in point is Nespresso.

Nespresso licences Krups, De’Longhi to make coffee makers that employ the capsule single-serve system to make espresso coffee maker. Machines that run on the Nespresso system only work with compatible Nespresso capsules. They have up to 22 varieties of coffee blends. Most Nespresso makers have a small footprint, operate at the push of a button and are quite stylish.

These employ bean-to-cup method of making coffee. They mostly produce mid-price range machines and premium espresso coffee maker.

Melitta specialises on bean-to-cup automatic and top range filter machines. This is a decent brand that has carved a name in the industry for being high spec and reliable.

Braun mainly produces drip-filter are quite simple but effective in making black coffee. Their machines are mostly budget range price point.

Andrew James.

This UK Company makes espresso, percolators and drip/filter that are usually budget range and quite popular.

Philips SENSEO

As the name suggests, these use SENSEO pods that make black coffee. They don’t have milk frothing functionality embedded in them. If you want milk frothing, you will have to buy a frothier separately. They target low price budget buyers.

Tassimo makes specialised machines that are compatible with T-DISC pods that are also produced by them. They can make espresso, normal coffee and other coffee-based drinks.

Coffee Machine Tools

These are the most common tools used in brewing coffee. In spite of having a coffee maker, these tools may come in hand in perfecting the making process.

Black Friday Coffee Grinders

If your coffee maker that does not have an automatic grinder, an external grinder will do you a lot of good. You see research reveals that coffee beans once ground lose up to 60% of their authentic taste in the first 15 minutes. To avoid it losing its flavour, you need to grind the beans when you make your coffee.

The size of the ground granules also affect the level which water passes through it and the quality of coffee produced. There grinders out there that offer multiple grind settings. Buy a grinder that will be able to grind beans (finely ground-espresso, medium grind-black coffee etc).

Tamping is an integral process in making quality coffee. Tampling is simply the process of squeezing together ground coffee in a compartment called portafilter. The pressurised water is then passed through the tamped coffee to make a brew. It is a delicate process. Over tamping may result in burnt while underdoing it makes formy, watery and light coffee. Your tamper has to fit the portafilter tightly for best results.

Milk Frother

Frothing is where regulated pressurised air is released into milk through a wand to particles of air (froth). This improves the taste of your brew. You could use steam to froth but steam froth is usually heavy and thicker and not very nice. You might need to buy an external frother if your machine does not have a milk frother integrated in it.

A jug comes in handy if you like milk-based drinks like a latte. The jug is used to contain milk to the frother. Usually, stainless, ceramic or glass milk jugs work the trick. They are easy to clean, resistant to heat and are unlikely to add extraneous flavour in your drink that will lower the quality of your coffee.

In case you don’t have a fully automated maker, you need digital scales. Scales are used to measure the bean to water ratio for a perfect drink.

You use to gauge the temperature of milk used for frothing. The best temperature is 65-700.  If the temperature soars above the 70-degree centigrade mark, the components of the milk disintegrate and release them to your drink. This alters the flavour and taste of your drink. You also need to keep an eye on the water temperature, the ideal temperature is between 90-95 degree centigrade, anything above that will burn your ground coffee and affect the resulting flavour of your brew.

There are so many varieties of coffee makers out there. Knowing the one that fits your taste, style and budget will help you get good value for money when you buy one.

Price though important is not the only determinant. You also need to figure out whether the machine runs on a subscription service, how automated it is, how quickly or slowly can it brew a cup, what kind of maintenance is involves and whether it is a single or dual boilermaker. All these aspects if well-considered will lead you to the best coffee maker priced at your budget.

Pro tip

It is important to properly calibrate your thermometer before use. You can use a cup of ice and a cup of boiling water to set the correct boiling and freezing temperatures.
